Lions International has lamented the increasing rate of unemployment in the country on a daily basis.
To address this, efforts at tackling youth unemployment in the country must begin with the provision of skills acquisition and empowerment programmes targeted at impacting lives.
District Governor, District 404-A4, Lion Osadebamwen Okoro, during a press briefing tagged “Welcome on Board” in Benin, said tackling youth restiveness occasioned by the alarming unemployment in the country will be history if society focuses on youth empowerment and skills acquisition for the teeming unemployed and growing youth population.
The highlighted focus area, which is in line with the mission of the organisation to empower and improve health and well-being, strengthen communities and support those in need through humanitarian services that impact lives will come to the fore with his onboarding as the District Governor, District 404-A4.
He said as District Governor, his primary aim is to focus on the youth, particularly providing youth empowerment and provision of skills acquisition programmes to reduce the unemployment crisis that has bedeviled the country.
Okoro said: “We can’t leave the youth in the street. Doing so will cause more crimes and criminality in our society. If we engage the youth positively, that means they will be busy and begin to think of meaningful things to do with their time and energy.
“We cannot start feeding the youth on the streets in Benin. What we want to do is teach them how to feed themselves. That is why we embarked on the building of a youth centre and skills acquisition centre in Benin so that at the end of the day, they would be busy with themselves.
Okoro, who lamented that unemployment was increasing in the country, said Lions International has brought succour to the youth by way of empowerment opportunities and skills acquisition programmes.
He said by getting youths trained in the skills acquisition centres, they could take care of themselves and, by extension, their families, which ultimately translates into taking care of the society.
