Lagos begins clearing of drainages

• Gives 48-hour quit notice to owners of illegal structures

Operatives of the Drainage Maintenance Department from Lagos State Ministry of Environment and Water Resources started the cleaning/de-flooding, maintenance dredging and evacuation of silts from System 156 Channel (Up Stream), Alpha Beach Road on Friday, to prevent flooding in the axis.

The state also issued property owners who built illegal structures and squatters along Gbagada Bariga Channel a 48-hour vacation notice.

The drainage channel, which defloods Bariga, Gbagada, Sholuyi downstream communities and environs, and discharges into System 1, was taken over by squatters who built on it, obstructing free flow of water.

Wahab said shanties were erected along the length of the channel and that the activities of the squatters had blocked collectors that were supposed to carry stormwater into the channel. He said this resulted in the flooding experienced during the week.

“Upon expiration of the notices served, the operatives of Lagos State Ministry of Environment and Water Resources will commence removal of contravening structures to deflood the area,” he said.
