FG will explore sports to rehabilitate inmates – Minister

The Federal Government (FG) is set to explore sports in an effort to rehabilitate inmates in correctional facilities across Nigeria.

The Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, made this known in a statement on Wednesday after meeting with some eminent football personalities, including the President of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), Alhaji Ibrahim Gusau.

“Sport, as a form of recreation, remains a unifier that is capable of bridging gaps and transforming people across the globe,” Tunji-Ojo wrote on X.

“Yesterday (Tuesday), I received a team from the Nigeria Football Federation (@thenff) which included the President, Alhaji Ibrahim Gusau; Dep. Gen. Secretary, Dr. Emmanuel Ipkeme; Director Legal, Okey Obi; Director Communications, Ademola Olajire; Director Competition, Ruth David; Assistant Director Protocol, Emmanuel Adesanya and former Super Eagles football star and coach, Augustine Eguavoen.

“During our meeting, we explored strategic partnership opportunities to harness the power of football as a catalyst for inmate education and rehabilitation, leveraging the sport’s unique potential to inspire confidence, personal growth, build skills, and foster positive transformation.”

Tunji-Ojo said under the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Tinubu, the FG is committed to fostering this marriage between the NFF and the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS).

According to him, this partnership aligns with the ministry’s vision to drive the rehabilitation of inmates across all correctional centres, promoting a more inclusive and supportive society.
