Cross River State Commissioner for Education, Steven Odey, has lamented the rot in the state’s education system.
Odey, who served as the Chairman, Cross River State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB) in the immediate past administration, raised the concern, yesterday, when the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Cross River chapter, paid him a courtesy call in his Calabar office.
While describing the state’s education system as a daunting challenge, the Commissioner said that it has been discovered that teachers were buying their certificates as much as N300, 000 just to get a teaching job.
Odey said: “The rot in the education sector is enormous. It’s a very serious situation, and that is why I will use this opportunity to call on the media to support us in fighting this ugly situation in our education sector by telling the stories.
“In a situation where you will ask a principal to collect N4,000, he goes ahead to add money and collect N8000; in a situation where you asked someone to collect N10,000, he goes ahead to collect N20,000. I won’t fold my hands and watch while people are paying money to be principals and head teachers when they don’t have the capacity. ”
“Since I came into office as commissioner and from my days in SUBEB, I have seen a lot. While trying to do the right thing, people will fight back. However, I’m happy that a lot of Cross Rivarians know we are doing the right thing.”
