• Sanwo-Olu warns corps members against drug abuse, other vices
• Charges them to make positive impact in Lagos
Lagos State Government has restated its commitment to leverage on the potentials of creative industries to enhance its economy.
The state’s Commissioner for Tourism, Arts and Culture, Toke Benson-Awoyinka, stated this during a town hall meeting on Afropolis Lagos 2024, scheduled for October 26 to November 3, 2024, in the state.
In a statement, yesterday, Benson-Awoyinka, accompanied by Special Adviser to Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu on Tourism, Arts and Culture, Idris Aregbe, highlighted the administration’s substantial investments in the creative sector.
The commissioner, who described Afropolis 2024 as more than just an event, but a celebration of the rich cultural heritage, creativity, and innovation of Lagos, also noted that Lagos State is renowned as the largest black cultural melting pot in the world, leading in various creative sectors, such as music, fashion, gaming, technology, design, film, dance, AI, and research.
IN another development, the wife of Lagos State Governor, Dr Ibijoke Sanwo-Olu, yesterday, warned corps members deployed to Lagos State not to engage in substance and drug abuse during their mandatory one year national service.
She implored them to make a positive impact for the growth of the state and Nigeria as a whole during their service year.
Sanwo-Olu made the call during an interactive session with the 2024 Batch ‘B’ Stream 1 corps members undergoing orientation at the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) Camp at Iyana Ipaja.
She noted that the NYSC scheme had fostered youth engagement and sustained the vision of its founding-fathers who believed in a united Nigeria despite the differences in language, culture and religion.
The governor’s wife, who seized the opportunity of the interactive session to enlighten the corps members about various programmes and interventions her office undertakes to improve the quality of life in Lagos, said that drug abuse had assumed an alarming rate, emphasising that the project requires public support in increasing the campaign messages and expanding its reach.
She added that her office would continue to raise public awareness about the dangers of Sexual and Gender-Based Violence, in addition to the provision of assistive and protective care for victims while ensuring access to justice.
Earlier in her welcome remarks, Lagos State Coordinator of the NYSC, Yetunde Baderinwa, described the governor’s wife’s visit as a source of motivation and inspiration to the corps members serving their fatherland.
Baderinwa appreciated the state government for its selfless efforts in ensuring that issues concerning the scheme get top priority, reiterating that the programme will continually contribute to the development of the nation.
