Study Reveals Why Women Masturbate

A recent study from Switzerland has revealed that many women masturbate primarily as a means to cope with stress and alleviate anxiety, rather than out of sexual desire.

Researchers surveyed 370 women, aged 18 to 56, on their masturbation habits and the reasons behind them. The study found that women who were psychologically distressed—experiencing regular anxiety or stress—masturbated more frequently than those who were not.

Previous research has suggested that masturbation can help relieve stress by releasing dopamine, a feel-good hormone, in the brain. One woman wrote in response to the survey: “For me, it is also a valve to relieve stress. I notice that I masturbate more often during exam periods, for example.” A second said: “[Masturbation] distracts me and relieves me from stress,” while a third added, “It brings me back to the here and now and makes me forget everything else for a moment.”

The study also highlighted that the main reasons women masturbated were to promote calm and relaxation, with 64 per cent citing this as their motivation.

Additionally, 55 per cent of participants stated they masturbated because it brought them joy. Overall, 12 per cent of the surveyed women indicated they masturbated specifically as a coping mechanism to relieve stress.

The researchers concluded that masturbation serves as a strategy to induce positive emotions and promote relaxation during stressful times, supporting previous findings on the role of masturbation in stress management. “According to the women in our study, masturbation serves as a strategy to induce positive emotions and promote relaxation when experiencing stress.

These findings are consistent with previous research that has highlighted the role of masturbation as a coping strategy for psychological stress and as a means of relaxation.”

The study was conducted using participants recruited via social media and university mailing lists. Factors such as relationship status, age, and education level were considered in the analysis. Of the participants, 85 per cent were heterosexual, 64 per cent were in relationships, and about half held a university degree.
