Minister meets House Committee on Sports tomorrow
Team Nigeria seems to have taken a cue from the Super Eagles as the country’s contingent to the Paris 2024 Olympics is set to be among the best dressed at Games, which will run from July 26 to August 11.
One part of the wears was unveiled by Sports Minister, John Enoh, when he handed over the country’s contingent to the Nigeria Olympic Committee (NOC) on Monday in Abuja.
The other, made by United States-based growing black sportswear manufacturing outfit, Actively Black, has continued to receive rave reviews among fashionistas, who describe it as good for other outings as well as sports.
The Actively Black kits, according to The New York Times, have gold-medal-worthy ambitions. Team Nigeria will be dressed for the opening ceremony, the closing ceremony, the podium, the Olympic Village and the track and field competition by the small label founded in 2020 by a former professional basketball player, Lanny Smith, in Los Angeles.
This is not Actively Black’s first outing with Nigeria, as the company dressed the country’s contingent to the Winter Olympics in 2021. But this is its biggest deal as it will kit over 200 athletes and up to 70 officials billed to represent the country in Paris.
Speaking on the kits, Smith told New York Times that “part of that Nigeria vibe is you’re going to look nice. I know we have to show up in a way that represents that. As a former athlete, you love that competition, that challenge.”
Apart from the wears from Actively Black, the Sports Ministry has also made arrangements for more kits to satisfy Nigeria’s needs in Paris.
Special Assistant (Media) to Sports Minister, Diana-Mary Nsan, told The Guardian that the team has been well taken care of in terms of wears and other materials, adding that some of the materials were on display when the ministry handed over Team Nigeria to the NOC.
“This is a special Olympics to the ministry and we have ensured that no member of the contingent will lack anything in Paris.
“The Actively Black kits were arranged by the NOC, while the ministry also provided more materials to take care of everybody, including Paralympic athletes. Some of the kits were modelled by the athletes, including Ese Brume, at the handover ceremony in Abuja,” she said.
Meanwhile, Sports Minister, John Enoh, will meet with members of the House of Representatives Committee on Sports to brief them on Nigeria’s readiness for the Olympic Games, among other issues.
Sources at the Sports Ministry said this would be the ministry’s avenue to explain to the House the country’s preparedness for the Games and the steps it has taken in resolving some of the lingering issues, including camping for the athletes and their officials.
