Shelley Duvall, Iconic Star of ‘The Shining,’ Dies at 75

Shelley Duvall, the acclaimed actress known for her memorable roles in “The Shining,” “Annie Hall,” and “Nashville,” has passed away at the age of 75. The news was confirmed by her partner, Dan Gilroy, to The Hollywood Reporter.

Duvall, renowned for her distinctive presence and large brown eyes, rose to fame with her performance in Robert Altman’s 1977 drama “3 Women,” which earned her the Best Actress award at the Cannes Film Festival and a BAFTA nomination. She later portrayed Olive Oyl alongside Robin Williams in Altman’s “Popeye.”

Despite her early success, Duvall withdrew from the Hollywood scene for two decades, only to return in 2023 with the horror film “The Forest Hills.”

Her career began with the 1970 dark comedy “Brewster McCloud,” directed by Altman, marking the start of a fruitful collaboration. She continued to captivate audiences with roles in Altman’s “Nashville” and Woody Allen’s “Annie Hall.” However, her portrayal of Wendy Torrance in Stanley Kubrick’s 1980 horror classic “The Shining” remains her most iconic role. The intense filming process took a significant toll on her, with Duvall recalling, “I had to cry 12 hours a day, all day long, for nine months straight.”

Duvall’s subsequent film credits included Terry Gilliam’s “Time Bandits” and the Steve Martin comedy “Roxanne.” She also produced and hosted the beloved 1980s children’s series “Faerie Tale Theatre.”

In the 1990s, her acting roles dwindled, with Jane Campion’s “The Portrait of a Lady” being a notable exception. Duvall largely vanished from the public eye after 2002, a disappearance attributed to the aftermath of a 1994 earthquake that damaged her home and the stress of her brother’s cancer diagnosis.

In a 2016 appearance on “Dr. Phil,” concerns about her mental health emerged when she spoke of needing help and recounted delusional experiences. Her partner, Gilroy, described her as “paranoid and just kind of delusional” during that period.

Despite her struggles, Shelley Duvall returned to acting in “The Forest Hills” was well-received. Novelist Nicole Flattery, writing for the Financial Times in 2023, hailed her as the “ultimate film star,” praising her ability to portray characters who mask their sadness with daffiness.
