Road mishap: Soludo exonerates state revenue agents

• Blames opposition figures for rumour, condoles with affected families

The Governor of Anambra State, Chukwuema Soludo, has denied allegations that activities of its revenue agents led to the fatal road crash which happened at the Eke Awgbu area of the state.

The Guardian learnt that five people died while six others were injured when a trailer collided with other vehicles on Tuesday.

The governor, in a statement signed by his Chief Press Secretary, Christian
Aburime, linked the crash to a mechanical failure.

He assured that his administration remained committed to improving the safety and well-being of all Anambra State residents, insisting that he would continue to work tirelessly to ensure that roads are safe.

He restated commitment towards ensuring that such incidents are minimised through proactive measures and public education campaigns.

According to the governor, the allegation was being circulated by certain opposition elements, suggesting that the accident was caused by revenue agents derogatorily referred to as ‘Soludo Boys.’

The governor expressed sympathy and condolences to the victims and families affected by the incident.

He said: “These assertions are found to be false and unsubstantiated. A thorough investigation has been conducted by the Anambra State Board of Internal Revenue, and the findings are clear: the accident was caused by a trailer carrying cement that experienced brake failure while descending the slope at Eke Awgbu, leading to the tragic crash.

“This is a matter of mechanical failure and not the result of any actions by state revenue agents, as falsely alleged.

“It is deeply regrettable that instead of focusing on the real issues and contributing to public safety, certain desperate opposition figures have continued to exploit tragic incidents for political gain by peddling propaganda against the governor of Anambra State.”

Soludo warned drivers to observe safe practices, especially how to handle slopy descent and avoid driving under the influence of alcohol.
