A traditional ruler in Osun State, the Orangun of Oke-Ila, Oba Adedokun Abolarin, has urged other monarchs to desist from assuming roles of security agencies and government in handling rape cases in their domains.
Oba Abolarin, specifically, stated that rape and other forms of sexual assault are not meant to be treated in the palaces but should be referred to security agencies and other relevant institutions to handle appropriately.
The monarch stated this during a programme on institutionalising a community task force and sign-off of the technical action and sustainability plan on prevention and response to women and girls with disabilities held in Osogbo and organised by Centre for Women’s Health and Information (CEWHIN).
Oba Abolarin, while lamenting rise in cases of rape and gender-based violence against women and girls with disabilities, said it was high time the menace is tackled headlong.
Also speaking at the programme, Director of CEWHIN, Atinuke Odukoya, said that the plan and intended goals of the technical action was to implement the action plans arrived at a recent stakeholders’ meeting the organisation organised in Osogbo and Ile-Ife.
According to Odukoya, the sign-off is committed to ensuring that the state is safe for women and girls with disabilities so they are not abused sexually, violently, physically or otherwise.
