Stakeholders have called for partnership to improve water systems that can enhance the health, economic stability, and quality of life of the people of Lagos, thereby reducing disease and freeing up time for education and employment opportunities.
They spoke at the launch of Lagos Water Partnership (LWP), a new initiative in partnership with investors, experts and policy makers to transform Lagos State’s water security and curb associated risks of water borne diseases.
The LWP, launched in partnership with Resilient Water Accelerator (RWA), is dedicated to mobilising private and public finance for water projects that enhance climate resilience in vulnerable communities.
Speaking at the signing of the partnership ceremony in Lagos, Chief Executive Officer of RWA, Kate Hughes, noted that the inauguration of the Lagos Water Partnership marked a significant milestone in efforts to build resilience and ensure sustainable water access for all.
“By forging partnerships and mobilising resources, we can create lasting impact and transform the water landscape in Lagos and beyond,” she said.
Chief Executive Officer of the AFC Capital Partners, Ms Ayaan Adam, said the Lagos Water Partnership is a template that could be used to drive a national framework for public and private partnership in water resources management.
According to her, the partnership will drive innovative finance, technology and expertise into the state’s water resources.
Adam urged members of the LWP to work hard in attracting investment into the sector for the benefit of everyone in Lagos.
On his part, Project Director, Arctic Infrastructure, Mr Lookman Oshodi, who is coordinating the partnership on behalf of Resilient Water Accelerator, said the inauguration of LWP, is significant in addressing the water needs of Lagos residents.
According to him, the partnership creates another milestone in the journey of bringing the private sector onboard to work collaboratively with the public sector for the benefit of Lagos residents.
“The establishment of the new Lagos Water Partnership represents a major milestone in Resilient Water Accelerator’s mission to unlock new sources of financing for necessary climate-resilient water projects.”
“This could include enhancing urban and rural water supply infrastructure, introducing innovative technologies, and spearheading the review and development of sector policies and regulations,” he added.
Earlier, the state’s commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, said the Lagos Water Partnership aligns perfectly with the state government’s vision of leveraging partnerships to improve environmental and water resources management.
