The Federal Government and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), yesterday, launched HerAfCFTA Programme aimed at promoting women’s inclusion in intra-Africa trade.
HerAfCFTA is an initiative stemming from UNDP’s renewed strategic focus on Africa, leveraging inter-African trade as a key mechanism for poverty reduction, job creation and boosting foreign exchange.
Speaking at the launch in Lagos, Minister of Industry, Trade and Investment, Doris Uzoka-Anite, said the initiative plays a pivotal role in developing trade within Africa, saying if utilised well it has the opportunity to unite the progress of Nigeria.
Uzoka-Anite, who was represented by the Director General of Nigeria Export Promotion Council (NEPC), Dr Nonye Ayeni, called on organisations to support the success of the initiative, saying every woman must be in charge of trade and investment.
According to her, the agency is focused on promoting trade and empowering women’s activities.
United Nations Assistant Secretary-General and Director of the UNDP Regional Bureau for Africa, Ms. Ahunna Eziakonwa, said the initiative is providing a platform for women to harness the potentials of trade.
According to her, HerAfCFTA underscores the importance of collective effort and calls on all development actors to invest in securing a prosperous future for women in the unified African market.
She said the initiative is enhanced to empower women in intra-Africa trade creating knowledge, capacity and facilities for businesses to function properly.
