CDHR, CACOL urge education minister to intervene in rift
The leadership crisis at the Federal College of Education, Technical (FCET), Akoka, Lagos, took a dramatic turn yesterday, when unidentified gunmen abducted the Deputy Registrar, Chris Olamiju, from his official residence.
Olamiju, a prominent figure among the protesting academic and non-academic members of staff against the continued tenure of the Provost, Dr. Wahab Azeez, was forcibly taken from his staff quarters around 3:00 a.m.
The assailants reportedly broke down his doors and dragged him away.
According to sources, the unidentified gunmen forcibly entered Olamiju’s staff quarters at about 3:00 a.m. and took him to an unknown place.
A source, who craved anonymity, said they suspect that the gunmen could be men of the Department of State Services (DSS).
Meanwhile, the Committee for the Defence of Human Rights (CDHR) and Centre for Anti-Corruption and Open Leadership (CACOL) have jointly called on the Minister of Education, Tahir Mamman, to urgently and decisively address the lingering crisis rocking the institution that has already become a public concern, lest it snowballs into a national disaster.
A statement, yesterday, signed by National President of CDHR, Debo Adeniran, said: “We are surprised that the Minister of Education did not make further enquiry about the outcome of his intervention in the matter which is still lingering and jeopardising the academic activities of the students and thereby denying them the benefits of full-fledged tutelage that they deserve from the college.
“We are worried that if the crisis lingers further than it presently is, and the Provost is not allowed to perform his official duties optimally, it is the tax-payers money that is being wasted since both the Provost and the staff that are spearheading the crisis will still be entitled to their salaries and allowances even when the aggrieved staff were only representing personal interests as they are not in any way duty-bound to do what they are doing by disrupting academic and other activities of the College against the advice of the Ministry of Education and other legal authorities.”
